Spain won the match 2-1. Nico Williams scored the first goal for Spain after 47 minutes and Cole Palmer equalized for England shortly after. He had come on as a substitute for England captain Harry Kane.
Spain scored their second goal of the night when Mikel Oyarzabal fired home the decisive ball with four minutes to go.
Despite the loss, there were immediate calls for the much-maligned England manager Gareth Southgate to be awarded a knighthood for leading the national team to a second successive European Cup final. England previously lost to Italy on penalties in 2021. That match took place at Wembley Stadium in London, the setting for England's last international triumph 58 years ago in 1966.
