“In January 1945, after two years in a death camp, 10-year-old Marcel, liberated by advancing Soviet troops, began a perilous 60-mile trek on foot from Auschwitz-Birkenau to Krakow, Poland, through an active war zone in search of his surviving family,” reads a description of the documentary. “This perilous journey was a child’s desperate march from Darkness to Light. Decades later, in a profound act of solidarity and remembrance, 250 cyclists from 12 countries retraced 84-year-old Marcel’s liberation path during the Ride for the Living. This annual event serves as both a memorial and a collective act of empathy, reenacting Marcel’s journey while shining a light on the ongoing struggle between the extremes of human nature: dehumanization and empathy.”
