In preparation for the August 16 release of Alien: Romulus, filmmaker Fede Álvarez sat down with Deadline at Comic-Con to get the lowdown on what fans can expect from his installment in the acclaimed sci-fi franchise. He also dished on his first meeting with Ridley Scott’s Scott Free, the decision to cast a younger cast, Hollywood’s current return to original films, and more.

Álvarez called his film “a pretty intense ride” – “45 years of great science fiction-horror ideas packed into two hours, plus even more of the ideas I bring to the table.”
His hope for the project, he said, was "to take the franchise back to its true form, in a way, to its original form — to be really honest about what this really is and what the first film was." Looking back at Scott's original Alien from 1979, he noted, the film was something that "scared everyone."
"Half the critics didn't like it; the other half liked it, and everyone agreed it was the most horrific, terrifying experience they'd ever had in the cinema," he said. "That's what made it, and that's what made it grow and make it a huge hit. It was really something people hadn't seen before, and it was a pure horror film."
