The film premieres Sunday night starring Breton Lalama, Khadijah Roberts-Abdullah, Xavier Lopez and Ali Garrison.
The captivating story centers on Z (Lalama), a pre-transition rising musical star struggling with his gender identity. After a year of testosterone, he’s finally starting to feel at home in his body, but has lost all control over his voice. At the same time, Z’s longtime partner, Danielle (Roberts-Abdullah), feels like she’s lost the person she fell in love with. Unable to find work with his changing voice, Z starts working as a bartender, where his new boss, Santi (Lopez), encourages him to fight for himself and his dreams. Z begins working with a singing teacher, Shelly (Garrison), to learn how to use his new voice and maybe even trust himself.
In a statement to Variety , Stevens spoke about the significance of the festival’s world premiere. “It’s a testament to the years of work that have gone into this, a nod to the level of talent and craftsmanship brought to the table by our incredible cast and crew, and a confirmation that stories like these, stories that contribute to the 2SLGBTQ+ canon, belong among the biggest films in the world.” Stevens added, “I’m excited to share Z’s journey with all audiences, but I’m especially excited that people who can relate to Z’s struggles and joys feel represented and validated.”
