Former GOP Rep. George Santos pleaded guilty today to multiple federal charges and faces a minimum of two years in prison, with a sentencing hearing scheduled for February. The charges include wire fraud, money laundering, theft of government funds and lying on House disclosure forms.

After telling the court he accepted full responsibility, the disgraced former New York lawmaker told reporters outside the courthouse that he "allowed ambition to cloud my judgment." "Pleading guilty is a step I never thought I would take, but it is the right thing to do," Santo added. "It is my own admission of the lies I have told myself."

Santos was elected to the House of Representatives in 2022 and his tenure in the legislature was fraught with ethics scandals amid numerous truth distortions. Early on, reports surfaced that he lied about key details on his resume and Santos admitted to telling lies about his background. He resigned from his committee positions less than a month after he was sworn in.
