“Girls5eva” seemed like the perfect candidate to receive the Netflix bounce — the well-documented phenomenon where a show’s migration to the service significantly increases its popularity, thanks to the platform’s unparalleled scale and engagement in the streaming space.

The critically acclaimed musical comedy series, produced by the creative team behind early Netflix success “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” was rescued by the Big Red N after Peacock was on the verge of canceling the series (echoing the Netflix journey of “Kimmy Schmidt” itself). Though “Girls5eva” struggled to break through on its original platform, there was reason to believe it would explode on Netflix, given in no small part the previous success of quirky comedies “The Office” and “Schitt’s Creek” there.
Unfortunately, ratings data suggests that the series' second life will likely end the same way as the first.
“Girls5eva” appeared to be off to a strong start in its debut week on Netflix. The first season was among the top 15 most-streamed original TV seasons of the week in terms of viewing time, with more than 116 million minutes watched, according to new streaming ratings from Luminate. (This reflects the Friday-Thursday period, March 15-21, and counts for the U.S. only.)
