Prepare a phone for a repair shop

Prepare a Google Pixel for repair: check backups and account access, use Repair mode or erase deliberately, and verify the phone when it comes back.

A repair shop may need to test your camera, charging port or screen. Your personal messages and saved accounts should not become part of that handoff. Prepare two things before leaving home: a way to recover your data, and an agreed way for the technician to test the fault.

This guide covers personally owned Google Pixel phones. It uses Pixel’s documented Repair mode and reset controls; other Android brands and iPhones have different procedures. If an employer manages the phone, arrange the repair through its support team before changing its configuration.

Ask what the shop needs before you change anything

Contact the shop with the exact model and fault. Ask whether it accepts the phone in Repair mode, whether the proposed work could erase storage, and how it will contact you while the phone is unavailable. Get the answer attached to the repair booking. An appointment for a screen replacement is not a promise that every file will survive.

Prepare a short fault description that someone else can repeat. A hypothetical example: “The microphone is quiet in ordinary calls, but recordings sound normal; the problem remains with the case removed.” Include when it started, any relevant damage and what you already tried. Avoid sending a full private conversation as evidence.

Photograph the phone’s exterior with another device, including existing cracks and marks. Keep these images, the repair reference and any agreed estimate somewhere other than the phone being handed over. Ask the shop to record the condition and accessories it receives on the receipt.

Check the recovery copy and your way back into accounts

Start while the phone is still usable. In Settings → Google services → Backup, inspect Backup details and the account receiving the backup. Google’s Pixel backup instructions distinguish device backups from photos, videos and contacts, which use their respective services.

Read what is actually included. If the backup screen offers an immediate backup, run it and wait for completion before continuing. Record its reported status and time. A switch showing that backup is enabled does not establish that today’s changes have finished uploading.

  • Check recent photos through the intended Google Photos account on another trusted device. Open a recent image at useful size instead of relying on its thumbnail.
  • Copy irreplaceable local documents and downloads to a private destination you control. Open a sample from that destination to check that you copied a usable file.
  • Check important apps individually for their own export or backup arrangements. Do not infer that an app’s presence in a general backup list guarantees all its contents will return.
  • Keep an alternative sign-in method available for accounts that normally ask this phone to approve access. Store recovery codes privately; never put them in the repair paperwork.

Know the Google Account password and the existing screen-lock code. Confirm you can access the account on a trusted computer before leaving the phone. If the only available second factor lives on this handset, resolve that dependency first. The related guide to account recovery can help you plan that access.

If the phone cannot turn on or the display prevents unlocking, you may be unable to create a fresh backup. Tell the shop that preserving the existing storage matters and ask what assessment is possible before erasure. A backup you cannot verify remains uncertain; do not describe it as completed on a service form.

Put a usable Pixel into Repair mode

Google’s Repair mode guide requires a supported Pixel running the Android 14 December 2023 update or later, with at least 2 GB available space. That is an eligibility minimum, not a claim about today’s latest Android release. Google also recommends system updates before entry; complete the backup first.

  1. Open Settings → System → Repair mode.
  2. Follow the instructions to enable it. Enter your existing screen-lock PIN, password or pattern yourself. If no screen lock exists, the entry flow prompts you to create and verify one.
  3. Allow the restart to finish. Confirm that the phone has entered Repair mode before handing it over.

These actions follow Google’s dedicated entry instructions. Keep your lock code private. Google explicitly says not to share it with the technician and not to create a new PIN once inside Repair mode.

If Repair mode is missing or entry fails, stop at that boundary. Check available storage and the phone’s software information against the requirements. Remove only replaceable downloads if you need space; deleting unique photographs to reach the threshold defeats the preparation. Ask the repair provider which alternative it accepts before changing more settings.

Repair mode provides a separate, restricted environment for service. It does not remove the possibility of data loss: Google says partners assess whether a reset is needed, and replacing parts that affect storage requires deletion. Keep the verified recovery copy even when entry succeeds.

If the agreed route requires erasure

Decide this before the handoff. If the shop requires a reset, revisit your backup checks and account access first. Erasure has no local undo button. A replacement screen does not restore files that were deleted before the repair.

Google’s factory-reset instructions say to charge to at least 70%, allow up to an hour, and wait 24 hours if you recently reset the Google Account password. Keep the account credentials and screen-lock information available for recovery.

When ready to erase, open Settings → System → Reset options → Erase all data (factory reset). Read the warning, choose Erase all data, and enter the PIN if requested before confirming. Wait for the reset and restart. Stop at the initial setup screen for the handoff unless the provider has agreed another arrangement.

If you cannot use the screen, do not improvise button combinations or remote wipes while hoping to save unsynced files. Ask the provider to explain the recovery consequences of its proposed procedure. The decision may be to delay erasure, rather than continue without an adequate copy.

Keep the receipt, then verify the returned phone

Remove the physical SIM and keep it with you. For an eSIM, arrange continued service with your carrier if you need the number on a temporary phone; deleting a profile is not a universal transfer method. Remove the case and unrelated accessories unless the shop specifically needs one to reproduce the fault. Give it an alternative contact method.

On return, ask whether storage was reset or the device replaced. If it remains in Repair mode, open Settings → System → Repair mode, or tap its notification, to start exiting. Authenticate with your existing lock code and let it reboot. Changes and files created inside Repair mode are discarded on exit.

If the phone was erased, use Google’s linked backup instructions during setup to select the appropriate saved device and data. Restore your own accounts privately. Keep backup copies until you have opened important files, checked recent photos and confirmed essential apps work.

Before considering the job finished, repeat the original fault test and check charging, touch response, cameras and a call. Compare the exterior with your condition photographs. If the fault persists, record the result and contact the shop with the repair reference; another reset should not be the automatic next experiment.

Sources, versions & scope

The steps describe the documented controls and expected checks; they are not a claim that every device or software release has been physically tested. Platform and version differences are stated with the procedure.
