The Hard Quartet – "Rio's Song" (official music video)
It would probably irritate the Hard Quartet — which features Pavement's Stephen Malkmus, Chavez/Superwolves' Matt Sweeney, the Dirty Three's Jim White and Bonnie Prince Billy/Ty Segall's Emmett Kelly — to be called an indie supergroup, but as the above words show, the shoe fits.
The group announced that their eponymous debut album will be released on October 4th via Matador Records, and did so in sublime fashion with a video for "Rio's Song" that almost perfectly mimics the Rolling Stones' iconic 1981 video for "Waiting on a Friend," down to the same building and bar on St. Marks Place in New York City's East Village. The video was directed by Jared Sherbert.
"The music video for 'Rio's Song' is the Hard Quartet's tribute to hot afternoon street rock and clowning around with lifelong friends in downtown New York City," the group said in a joint statement. "Director Jared Sherbert shot it guerrilla-style at St. Mark's Place and the International Bar on July 15, 2024. It features local NYC artists, musicians, activists, skaters, and icons the band holds dear."
