Vice President Kamala Harris cast herself as the “underdog” in the presidential race, calling her Republican opponent Donald Trump “just weird,” while Trump portrayed Harris as a “crazy liberal” as the rivals kicked off their campaign campaigns on Saturday.

The dual appearances capped a whirlwind week that saw Harris rise to the top of the Democratic ticket after President Joe Biden, 81, dropped his re-election bid amid mounting pressure from fellow Democrats. A series of polls suggest Harris's arrival could erase Trump's lead over Biden in a matter of days.
Harris, speaking at a private fundraising event headlined by singer-songwriter James Taylor in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, said much of the rhetoric from Trump and his running mate, U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance, was “just plain weird.”
Her use of the word "weird" to describe her opponents was part of a new strategy for Democrats. Harris' campaign called Trump "old and pretty weird" after his appearance on Fox News on Thursday, and at least one supporter showed up outside Saturday's event holding a sign that read "Trump is weird."
