Gabriela Rep. Arlene Brosas praised the passage of House Bill 402, which recognizes the specific needs of women deprived of their liberty, including health care needs such as regular gynecological exams, mental health care and proper nutrition for pregnant and nursing mothers.
“Women in detention are among the most vulnerable groups in our societies. They are at greater risk of physical and sexual abuse, human rights violations and health problems due to their specific needs as women and mothers,” Brosas said.
“Nakita had a relationship with a political prisoner in Reina Nasino some time ago. The bill prohibits degrading practices such as restraining women during childbirth and ensures that mothers can stay with their young children, preventing heartbreaking incidents like what happened to Baby River in 2020,” she added.
