Ifans' character played a pivotal role in the show's debut season. However, the former Hand of the King was mysteriously absent from most of the second season after being removed from his post by King Aegon II in Episode 2. He finally returns in the House of the Dragon Season 2 finale, albeit in a cameo.

During a recent press conference, show creator Ryan Condal went into great detail about Hightower's late-season appearance. Condal shied away from giving specific details about the character's fate, but did offer a tease of his Season 3 appearance. "We were excited to have Rhys back in the story," he said. "I will just say that the Otto Hightower story is not over."
