When Variety Intelligence Platform announced the death of peak TV earlier this year, the evidence was already clear that original television content would not recover quickly. Market conditions in the TV industry, combined with the fallout from prolonged strikes in 2023, would continue to depress series production for at least the next year and possibly beyond.

Data from Luminate Film & TV shows that the number of original TV seasons released by the eight largest SVODs is down nearly 20% year-on-year in the first half of 2024 (which includes releases through June).
From January through June, the platforms Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Max, Prime Video, Paramount+, Peacock and Apple TV+ collectively released 367 new television seasons, up from 452 in 2023.
