Discovery Plus launched on Monday. While the streaming market is already crowded, the new platform looks set to provide a home for viewers who crave a bit of reality in what they watch.
As the streaming wars rage toward the new year, Discovery Plus debuted on January 4, providing a new home for a variety of shows focused on real life. Programs from networks like HGTV, The Food Network, TLC, Animal Planet, and A&E can all be found on the new platform.
With Disney Plus, Hulu, Netflix, and HBO Max already established, Discovery Plus will have to offer viewers something new and different. Shows like Shark Week have established Discovery Channel’s brand and voice in the cable world, but what will make Discovery Plus unique in the streaming world?
“True crime, different types of nature programming, home renovations… we’re definitely winning in terms of volume and variety on that type of content,” Lisa Holme, who oversees Discovery’s streaming service, told Lifewire in a phone call. “That’s all we do.”
