Imax Live is out today with the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics. Bleecker Street debuts the star-studded The Fabulous Four, Sundance winner Didi opens in limited release, and Kit Harrington is a werewolf dad in The Beast Within. Another big wide release, Deadpool & Wolverine, dominates the box office this weekend. Tentpoles are good for the box office, but the indie market is still waiting to see if big movies can boost small movies.

2024 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony to be Screened in IMAX

Imax wins for most current. In its continuing experiments with live events, the big-screen exhibitor is currently showing the opening ceremony of the Paris Summer Olympics at 100 locations across the country.

Advance ticket sales have been a bit slow, but that's to be expected – it's a four-hour stretch in the middle of the day, and even earlier on the West Coast – but Deadline has heard that performances are either sold out or close to selling out in a number of markets, from New York and Atlanta to Washington, D.C., Detroit, San Francisco, Fort Myers, Philly, Boston and Minneapolis.

It will be the first time ever that the Opening Ceremony will be presented live in Imax, for the first ever Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony not to be held in a stadium. Instead, this will be a tour of the city as a four-mile flotilla travels down the River Seine — nearly 100 boats carrying thousands of athletes from more than 200 countries. The boats will follow the Seine past iconic sites including the Ponte Austerlitz and the Jardin des Plantes, cross into central Paris, and finish in front of the Trocadéro, where the final elements of the ceremony will take place.
