It’s a mixed specialist market that’s still below pre-Covid levels but has been boosted recently by hits like Thelma, and there’s hope that moviegoers are starting to take control of what they want to see, when and where.

"I think you're starting to see who's really theatrical and who's not. The lines are getting clearer. Like, 'Okay, I'm going to see this, Inside Out 2, in a theater, and I'm going to see that at the Angelika, or wherever. But I'm going to see it in a theater,'" says one distribution executive. "I think it's becoming more and more clear that movies are theatrical movies. And I think it took a while for people to realize that."

There are a lot of good movies, and that's something to celebrate.
