Also expanding into New York and Los Angeles is Columbia Pictures' Jason Reitman's Saturday Night, which opened last week, adding ten new markets for a total of 21 locations before it hits theaters on October 11. The film, based on the true story of what happened behind the scenes in the 90 minutes leading up to the first broadcast of Saturday Night Live in 1975, debuted to $270,000 from five theaters in New York and Los Angeles, for a whopping average gross of $54,000 per theater.
Moderate Releases: Sony Pictures Classics' Saoirse Ronan-starring, Nora Fingscheidt-directed drama The Outrun opens on 508 screens. After a decade in London, 29-year-old Rona (Ronan) returns home to the Orkney Islands. Sober but lonely, she tries to suppress her memories of the events that set her on this journey of recovery. Slowly, the mystical land seeps into her inner world and, one day at a time, Rona finds hope and strength within herself amid the fierce storms and bracingly cold sea. Based on the bestselling memoir by Amy Liptrot, who co-wrote the screenplay with Fingscheidt.
The film premiered at Sundance, opened in Edinburgh and also stars Paapa Essiedu, Stephen Dillane and Saskia Reeves.
