Emmys: Nominations & Numbers
Om, nom nom: It was another stellar Emmy nomination day for non-U.S. acting and producing talent on Wednesday. Shogun topped the overall program list with 25, thanks to a U.S. production. The hit series was filmed largely in Japan and primarily in Japanese, with Hiroyuki Sanada, Tadanobu Asano, Takehiro Hira, Anna Sawai and Vasco Rodrigues all up for acting honors at the September ceremony. Netflix's U.K. hit Baby Reindeer shrugged off controversy over its protection processes and authenticity to nab 11 nominations, including one for Richard Gadd in Best Actor in a Limited Series or Anthology. The final season of The Crown earned a total of 18 nominations, making the Netflix royal saga the most-nominated show in Emmy history. That included a first-ever nomination for Dominic West. Considering he starred in The Wire and The Affair, that stat seems far-fetched, but it's true. Apple TV+ drama Slow Horses also got its first taste of Emmy success, garnering nine nominations for its third season, including a nod for Best Actor in a Drama Series for Gary Oldman. Jack Lowden and Jonathan Pryce also had their names read out for the series, with the two ironically running against each other in a Best Supporting Actor clash for Pryce's role as Prince Philip in The Crown. Idris Elba will challenge West and Oldman for Best Actor (Drama Series). Other overseas-tinged shows that nabbed nominations included Disney+ documentaries Welcome to Wrexham and Beckham, BBC natural history hit Planet Earth III, Netflix’s Squid Game: The Challenge, Apple TV+ travelogue The Reluctant Traveler starring Eugene Levy, Sky/Peacock drama The Tattooist of Auschwitz and Hannah Waddingham: Home for Christmas, which featured a bit of Emmy-favourite Ted Lasso now that the comedy-drama is over. Notable international snubs included David Oyelowo being passed over for his role in Lawmen: Bass Reeves, Netflix comedy-drama The Gentlemen (though he did earn a directing nomination) and the final season of Loki starring Tom Hiddleston.
