Interview with Girl You Know It's True: Matthias Schweighöfer about the film Milli Vanilli
“Girl You Know It’s True centers on the true story of the infamous scandal surrounding the rise of dancers Robert Pilatus (Tijan Njie) and Fabrice Morvan (Elan Ben) in the late 80s as “Milli Vanilli.” Orchestrated by music producer Frank Farian (Matthias Schweighofer), they became global stars with three number one hits in the US. But only a small circle of insiders knows that the duo didn’t actually sing, but lip-synced to the voices of two other artists. At the height of their fame, Milli Vanilli won a Grammy Award, but the situation behind the scenes escalated and the pressure on Rob and Fab mounted. When the truth came out, they found themselves embroiled in one of the biggest scandals in music history,” the synopsis reads.
Tyler Treese: Since you were a kid when Milli Vanilli really started to get popular and all this was really happening, what are your memories of that time? Were you a fan of Milli Vanilli, or what was your relationship with them?
Matthias Schweighöfer: That's a very interesting question. When the Milli Vanilli scandal happened, it was the same time that war broke out in Germany. East Germany, West Germany, reunited. So I explored the pop duo a few years later when I was 15-17 and when I started preparing for this film.
