Newtown Massacre: A Timeline of Events
In December 2012, a young man named Adam Lanza entered Sandy Hook Elementary School and opened fire on teachers and students. According to reports, 26 people were killed and two others were injured in the shooting. Additionally, media reported that 20 children were killed in the shooting. After causing chaos for several minutes, Lanza committed suicide after authorities entered the school grounds. The incident forced the school board to move students to a temporary location. However, Sandy Hook Elementary School reopened as a new educational institution in 2016.
NBC Connecticut reported that people heard the first shots on the school grounds as children ran across the sidewalk to save themselves from the attack. Meanwhile, Newsweek reported that Lanza entered Sandy Hook Elementary School by smashing through the locked security door. He then killed the school principal and the psychologist before entering the classrooms. Although teachers tried to save the children by hiding them in the bathroom and blocking the doors, Lanza fired through the doors, killing several children and teachers.
Three minutes after the shooting began, multiple police officers arrived on the school grounds and surrounded the building. According to NBC Connecticut, officers heard the last shot around 9:40 a.m., which turned out to be Adam Lanza's self-inflicted fatal shot.
