The history of the messaging app Signal is closely intertwined with that of WhatsApp.
Signal was developed by the Signal Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit organization. Signal Foundation was founded by Moxie Marlinspike and WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton. Acton left WhatsApp after speaking out against Facebook’s monetization of the app in 2017. In 2018, he and Marlinspike co-founded the foundation responsible for Signal Messenger.
