The film initially seemed like a distant dream, as the rights to Mickey's character were firmly in the hands of The Walt Disney Company. However, a glimmer of hope arose on January 1, 2024 when Steamboat Willie finally entered the public domain, according to IGN . LaMorte quickly seized the opportunity to reimagine the legendary mouse character in his own way. As a result, a horror reimagining of Steamboat Willie was confirmed, just a day after Disney's copyright expired. David Howard Thornton has since been cast to play the title character. As of this writing, the film is scheduled for release sometime in 2025.
