With a name like Lily Blossom Bloom, becoming a florist seems like a natural path for Blake Lively's character in "It Ends With Us." Colleen Hoover's 2016 novel details the main character's flower shop — the aptly named "Lily Bloom's" — which has a dark, gothic feel to it in contrast to the typical pink hues associated with flora.

The film’s production designer, Russell Barnes, pored over the book to make sure he had the store just right. “I had a worn, dog-eared copy of ‘It Ends with Us’ that my wife and I traveled around Costa Rica and Nicaragua reading it in turns. It eventually found a home in our art department, where it became filled with Post-it notes in different colors, with elaborate markings of characters, locations, design elements, and Easter eggs for the viewer. Importantly, it included specific notes about the store and flowers, noting the use of leather, dark gothic colors, and steampunk design. Colleen’s rich descriptions led to initial conversations with Justin about the look and feel of the store.”

Building a location that readers have imagined in a million different ways certainly added a layer of pressure to the design process, but Barnes and his team were up to the task. "We were very considerate of the fans and did everything we could to stay true to the book as much as possible. When a book is adapted into a film, there are adjustments that have to be made specifically for the visual medium, which sometimes results in necessary deviations. We were aware of this, so we presented ideas to the entire creative team at every stage, constantly asking, 'Does this fit our character?'"

Barnes fondly remembers working with Lively and director/star Justin Baldoni in the early stages of the design process, adding, "Justin had a clear vision of the overall aesthetic he wanted, and we pulled inspiration from local shops and images we found online and on social media. We were going for a vintage Parisian scaled-up shabby chic look."
