ITV is not yet in a position where it “has to turn material down because we can’t afford it”, said programme director Kevin Lygo, who nevertheless acknowledged that “the middle ground has disappeared” from the market with big hits such as Netflix’s The Gentlemen.
Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Lygo attempted to calm the spirits of producers watching his session about the lack of work, after a panel featuring a number of executives said there were far too many production companies in the ecosystem.
Lygo said his commissioning team is constantly thinking about the balance between not wanting to “mortgage the entire future” and hiring a producer “who comes in with something that he suddenly wants to do next week.”
