Last year, during the SAG-AFTRA walkout, Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis announced that she would personally lobby for the role of Dr. Kureha in season 2 of One Piece. Fans on social media then expressed their desire for Curtis to play the fan-favorite character.
One Piece Live Action Season 2 Dr Kureha has been cast and it's NOT Jamie Lee Curtis!
However, nearly a year after Curtis' Instagram post, it has been officially confirmed that the acclaimed actress is no longer attached to the role due to scheduling conflicts with other projects. Curtis currently has a number of films lined up for her, including the live-action Borderlands film, the Freaky Friday sequel, Gia Coppola's The Last Showgirl and Paul Greengrass' The Lost Bus.
Speaking to Deadline, producer Becky Clements confirmed that Curtis "absolutely" wanted to play Kureha in One Piece season 2. However, production on the Netflix series couldn't fit around Curtis' schedule.
"She loves the show. She has too many movies and TV shows that she's producing, so our production dates aren't going to work," Clements said. "She absolutely wanted to do it, but she has deals coming up and it just got complicated."
