"In rural Western Massachusetts, 11-year-old Lacy spends the summer of 1991 at home, captivated by her own imagination and the attentions of her mother, Janet. As the months pass, three visitors enter their orbit, all captivated by Janet and her enchanting nature. In her lonely moments, Lacy inhabits an inner world so exquisitely detailed that it begins to seep into the outside world. The film captures one child's experience of the passing of time, and the unspeakable plight of a daughter who is no longer in love with her mother, in this exceptionally sublime feature film debut," the synopsis reads.
Janet Planet is scheduled to make its streaming debut on Friday, November 1 on Max, followed by its linear debut on Saturday, November 2 on HBO. Prior to its release on Max, the film had its world premiere at last year’s 50th Telluride Film Festival. It is currently Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with a Tomatometer rating of 85%.
The film is written and directed by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Annie Baker in her feature directorial debut. The cast includes Julianne Nicholson (Dream Scenario), Zoe Ziegler, Elias Koteas (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), Will Patton (Minari), and Sophie Okonedo (Slow Horses). The film is produced by Baker, Dan Janvey, Derrick Tseng, and Andrew Goldman.
