JD Vance, who formally accepted the Republican nomination for vice president tonight, delivered a speech that aimed to win over the key swing states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. He shared heartwarming and sometimes funny biographical details about his own life.

But in his first speech on the national stage, he was surprisingly subdued, less fiery in his delivery than many of his social media posts might suggest. It was the kind of speech that even Donald Trump, watching from the VIP box, might have described as “low energy,” at least compared with the speech delivered earlier in the hour by his son, Donald Trump Jr.
“To the people of Middletown, Ohio and all the forgotten communities in Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Ohio and every corner of our country, I promise you this: I will be a vice president who never forgets where he came from,” Vance said.
According to CBS News, Vance mentioned Michigan five times, Pennsylvania five times and Wisconsin three times, all three of which are President Joe Biden's top paths to re-election.
