ABC first reached out to Kimmel, a four-time Oscar host who hosted the previous two ceremonies. Kimmel reportedly turned down the opportunity to host for a fifth time earlier this summer before taking a break from Jimmy Kimmel Live!
After Kimmel declined, Mulaney was next in line to host for ABC and the Academy. However, Mulaney turned down the gig, citing a busy schedule with several projects, including several stand-up dates, on the horizon. One of those commitments could be a new season of Everybody's in LA, Mulaney's talk show that is currently being renewed by Netflix. The six-episode series premiered in May 2024 to mostly positive reviews.
Mulaney rose to prominence as an Oscar host after the comedian hosted the 14th Annual Governor's Awards in January 2024. Mulaney also hosted the 2024 Oscars, doing a hilarious bit about Kevin Costner and Field of Dreams.
