Rowling’s seven-book series about the trials and triumphs of Harry and his friends at Hogwarts School of Wizardry has sold more than 500 million copies worldwide and has been made into a film worth more than $10 billion. But when her first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (known in the US as The Sorcerer’s Stone), was published in 1997, things felt very different.
Rowling told The Sunday Times newspaper that it was all a bit of a blur until she won the Smarties Book Prize in 1997. “Then I got a record advance from America and everything went crazy.”
