President Biden defended his record and pledged to be the “best volunteer” for Kamala Harris in a 49-minute speech Monday night that ran well past midnight on the East Coast.

The convention was already running more than an hour late when the president took the stage at the United Center in Chicago. An appearance by James Taylor, scheduled just before Biden’s daughter was introduced, had to be cut short due to time constraints.
The president received a four-minute standing ovation from the crowd, which chanted “Thank you, Joe!” at several points in the speech. The speech was also briefly interrupted by pro-Palestinian protesters who unfurled a banner reading “Stop Arming Israel.”
The speech was billed as Biden passing the torch to Vice President Kamala Harris, who was in the stands with her running mate, Tim Walz, and then came onstage with her husband, Doug Emhoff, to embrace the president.
