In a segment analyzing the October 1 debate, in which Republican VP candidate J.D. Vance sidestepped fact-checking and Democratic VP candidate Tim Walz gave a less-than-solid performance (which Saturday Night Live later mocked), the comedic host argued that "etiquette really doesn't matter" when it comes to immigrant and women's rights.
"It's like reading a ransom note and thinking, 'This cursive is so beautiful. Look at the capital 'Y' in 'You have 24 hours before he dies.' There are still people who are well-mannered,'" he joked.
Oliver then turned his attention to Vance's actual political leanings, including his ties to far-right Christian evangelical leader Lance Wallnau, who once said that presidential candidate Kamala Harris harbored an "occult spirit."
