On the set of Fox’s upcoming lifeguard procedural Rescue: HI-Surf, there are no divas. Except maybe the Pacific Ocean itself.
Rescue: HI-Surf (FOX) Trailer HD – Lifeguard Drama Series
The series was filmed in the exact spot where it is set, on O'ahu's North Shore, considered the most famous and dangerous stretch of coastline in the world. Production delays due to weather, sharks, whales and even beachgoers needing to be rescued were common, executive producer John Wells explained.
"We're constantly adjusting to what we're actually getting," Wells said after an industry premiere screening of the episode in Los Angeles. "The actors often have to be prepared for one thing, and then it looks a little different, and we have to go this way, or the ocean flows that way, or a whale shows up, which is problematic."
Because the series follows the lifeguards’ personal and professional lives, Wells and showrunner Matt Kester wanted the audience to be involved in the action of saving lives in such a difficult and often life-threatening environment, rather than watching from the shoreline. That meant the cast and crew had to be, too.
