Todd Phillips explains why a scene from Joker: Folie à Deux, in which Lady Gaga's Harley Quinn kisses another woman, didn't make the final cut.

Todd Phillips Reveals Why Lady Gaga's Kiss Scene in Joker: Folie à Deux Was Cut

Paparazzi photos from the set of the Warner Bros. film in New York City in March 2023 showed the singer kissing a woman. The scene takes place when Harley arrives at the courthouse to support Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck. As Harley walks up the courthouse steps, an awkward man catches her eye and kisses her.

"There was dialogue in it, and suddenly I wanted it to be more of a music and mood moment," Phillips said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly about the improvised scene. "In order for that moment to play, it needed dialogue. Like, the woman said something, and then Gaga stopped and did this, and it just got in the way of the moment."

Gaga took on the role of Harley Quinn after many iterations of the character in animated versions and Margot Robbie's version in the DC Extended Universe. Earlier this year, Phillips had hinted at how Gaga's version of the character would be different from previous versions.
