Julia Louis-Dreyfus, whose character Vice President Selina Meyer has been compared by many to Democratic White House candidate Kamala Harris, has hinted that she will attend the Democratic National Convention in Chicago this month to support Harris.
'Veep' star will be 'extra involved' in Kamala Harris campaign despite brazen comparison
Louis-Dreyfus told The Times of London: "I probably will, yes," adding that she plans to be "extra involved" in Harris' campaign to defeat Donald Trump in the election.
Veep, based on a fictional vice president who ends up in the top chair and won 17 Emmy Awards, including six for Louis-Dreyfus in the title role, ended in 2019, but the HBO comedy's ratings have soared since Harris' run was announced. Creator Armando Iannucci recently said that Meyer was in no way modeled on Harris, but admitted that comparisons between the two were inevitable.
Louis-Dreyfus said the show played on the fact that female candidates are always scrutinised more than their male counterparts. She told The Times: "That's the reality and we played on that and used it to our comedic advantage. There's an episode where a character suggests that Selina start a speech with 'As a woman' and she says, 'I don't identify as a woman! People can't know that! Men hate that and women who hate women hate that, which I think is most women.' So we used that for a lot of fodder."
