Kayla Unbehaun, whose mother, Heather Unbehaun, abducted her in 2017, has now been found thanks to an episode of Unsolved Mysteries. Kayla was only nine years old when her mother abducted her from the Chicago suburb of South Elgin. Heather, who did not have custody of Kayla, took the girl to a Fourth of July parade. The pair were last seen after the event. The next day, Kayla's father, Ryan Iserka, heard from relatives that Heather had taken Kayla camping, but they never returned.

Kayla Unbehaun Recognized From Netflix Episode 'Unsolved Mysteries' 6 Years After Abduction

In 2023, Ryan Iserka reunited with Kayla Unbehaun after a true-crime enthusiast recognized the girl from an episode of Unsolved Mysteries. A woman spotted Kayla, then 15, at a store in Ashville, North Carolina and called authorities. The events unfolded just months after Kayla Unbehaun's episode of Unsolved Mysteries premiered on Netflix in November 2022. Following the discovery, North Carolina authorities arrested Kayla's mother, Heather Unbehaun, on a warrant. She was charged with kidnapping and child abduction, among other charges.

Unsolved Mysteries explores several such cases in each segment. Volume 4 of the acclaimed mystery series recently premiered on Netflix with new unsolved cases. Kayla Unbehaun's case premiered in Unsolved Mysteries Volume 3 Episode 9, titled "Abducted by a Parent." The synopsis reads: "When a non-custodial parent abducts their own child, the heartbreaking grief is unbearable for the left-behind parent and they refuse to stop searching. Can you help these parents find their children?"

According to CNN, Heather and Kayla Unbehaun were together on July 4, 2017, when the abduction occurred. Kayla's father, Ryan Iserka, was awarded full custody of the girl earlier that year, while Heather was given unaccompanied "parenting time." Heather and Iserka shared custody of Kayla, but the mother decided to move to Georgia with their daughter. That's when Iserka filed for full custody.
