EXCLUSIVE: Following the success of The Family Plan, Mark Wahlberg and Apple are looking to do business again, as sources tell Deadline that Apple Original Films has landed the popular Weekend Warriors package in a competitive situation. The new film will be written and directed by Stephen Chbosky, and will star Wahlberg.
Plan B and The SpringHill Company will produce the project, which will be developed and produced by Apple Studios. Insiders say the film is in early development.
The project is based on the 2023 film Weekend Rebels, an original German-language sports comedy-drama based on the true story of Mirco and Jason von Juterzcenka. The story follows a father and his autistic son, who wants to find a favorite Premier League soccer club and his father takes him to each team so he can decide. Sources say this version would be set in the NBA, given the ties to SpringHill.
Sources say SpringHill is the driving force behind the package, given the positive story. After a trailer for the film was recently shown at a WME talent conference (representing the agency, SpringHill, Wahlberg and Chbosky), it didn’t take long for Wahlberg and Chbosky to sign on to the package.
