I’m standing next to a cemetery, the smell of freshly dug earth filling the air. Nearby, a man with a blue face and green skin walks by, while another has an arrow firmly embedded in his forehead. “Welcome to the afterlife!” someone shouts as they speed past.

Thankfully, it’s not really the afterlife. I’m actually on set at Warner Bros.’ Leavesden Studios, just outside London, where crew and cast are running around trying to capture various shots for a Beetlejuice-themed Carmax commercial.

On one side of the studio is a tiny model town, complete with miniature cars and people (later, one crew member uses a tiny business card-sized clapperboard to mark the shot, while another pulls the tiny car along with a string), while on the other side is a life-size set of a "Beetlemax" dealership, with the obligatory cemetery next to it.

The inspiration for the shoot, led by veteran commercial director Ulf Johansson, is: “What if Beetlejuice ran a used car dealership?” To that end, the dealership’s lobby is filled with dead customers (including the aforementioned man with an arrow through his head), while the staff is made up of “Shrinkers” (people whose heads have shrunk).
