Mendes stars opposite the previously announced Nicholas Galitzine, who plays He-Man. Her character, Teela, is a warrior who, as captain of Eternia's Royal Guard, is responsible for protecting the royal family, particularly Prince Adam, aka He-Man.
Based on the iconic Mattel franchise, the film’s plot is being kept tightly under wraps. Laika’s Travis Knight is directing from a screenplay by Chris Butler, with David Callaham and Aaron and Adam Nee working on the first draft. Previously in development at Sony and Netflix, Masters of the Universe is being produced by Escape Artists and Mattel Films and is set to open exclusively in theaters worldwide on June 5, 2026.
The Masters of the Universe franchise, which centered on the battle between the heroic He-Man – the most powerful man in the universe – and the evil Skeletor, was introduced in 1982 with a line of popular action figures. A year later, the animated series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe premiered, becoming one of the first children's programs to air on television for two seasons. Several additional film and television adaptations followed, and today the franchise continues to span consumer touchpoints such as toys and video games.
