The Murder of Melissa Witt – Who Killed Her?
The Hulu documentary series At Witt's End: The Hunt for a Killer explores how Arkansas woman Melissa Witt was abducted in Fort Smith in December 1994. Witt reportedly went to meet her mother at Bowling World when someone kidnapped her from the parking lot. The documentary re-examines what happened and how police came to suspect Charles Ray Vines was involved in her murder.
ABC News reported that police investigated the disappearance and found strong evidence. They believed that someone had kidnapped Melissa Witt. Additionally, they found blood in Witt's vehicle and in the parking lot. Authorities continued to investigate the case for weeks. Meanwhile, police noted that Witt was an ambassador for her school and was well-liked by everyone. ABC News quoted investigators as saying, "She was an ambassador for her school, meaning that the school would let her go and recruit students because they wanted students like her. You know, she worked after school. She was already a hard worker. She had big dreams for her life."
On January 13, 1995, two hunters contacted police and told them about the body of a woman in the Ozark National Forest. After police arrived and investigated the crime scene, they announced that they had found the body of Melissa Witt. During further investigation, authorities named Charles Ray Vines as the prime suspect due to his criminal history. Police did arrest Charles Ray Vines, but the arrest came after he was accused of rape and murder in two other cases. According to ABC News, the court convicted him in both cases and sentenced him to death.
