A new study confirms what many women in television have suspected: men still outnumber women when it comes to producing reality shows.
Reality show tricks men into dating trans woman who later committed suicide in horrific story
According to a study commissioned by the Geena Davis Institute, Banijay Entertainment and Everywoman Studios, 58.4% of executive producers, supervising producers and series creators are men, while only 41.5% of creators are women.
In the United States, the United Kingdom, Brazil and France, three-quarters of reality TV creators are men (73.7% compared to 25.7% women). This gender gap among creators is most pronounced in the US (80.6% men compared to 16.1% women), the study found.
The study was conducted across those four countries over three years (2021–2023). The shows included in the study were limited to those that had consistent stars or contestants throughout the season or series, or a consistent story told over the course of multiple episodes. This includes shows from the Real Housewives franchise and Below Deck, along with documentary series like Surviving R. Kelly and competition shows like Lego Masters and MasterChef.
