Despicable Me director speaks out about possible Minions live-action film
The slapstick-loving Minions of “Despicable Me” have taken the franchise to $5.4 billion and counting at the worldwide box office, making it the highest-grossing animated series in history. Chris Renaud, who directed the first two “Despicable Me” films and returned this year for the fourth sequel, recently spoke with Film Hounds magazine and was asked about Disney’s trend of adapting its animated classics into live-action films. Would he ever want to see the Minions transition to that format?
“God, I hope not. That's my answer,” Renaud replied bluntly.
"If there were conversations like that, I didn't experience them," Renaud said. "But for me, what defines the world is that it's animated and it allows us to get away with what we can get away with. Like locking a minion in a vending machine, or, you know, blowing up Gru when he attacks Vector. These are really cartoon ideas, like in a Bugs Bunny cartoon."
