Netflix is currently developing a brand new Pride and Prejudice series based on Jane Austen's beloved 1813 novel of the same name. This comes after the BBC recently announced a Pride and Prejudice spin-off centered on Mary Bennet.
Persuasion starring Dakota Johnson | Official Trailer | Netflix
This is the latest TV adaptation of the classic romantic drama, following the 1995 miniseries starring Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy and Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth Bennett. The streamer is also no stranger to adapting Austen's work, having previously released a 2022 film adaptation of Persuasion starring Dakota Johnson.
Netflix's new Pride and Prejudice series is being written by Everything I Know About Love author Dolly Alderton. The project currently does not have a cast or director. The story follows the story of Elizabeth Bennet, an intelligent but headstrong young woman who falls in love with the wealthy and arrogant Mr. Darcy, despite having a negative first impression of him. Of all the previous film adaptations of the novel, the 2005 film starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen is the most popular to date, with Knightley also earning an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.
The official synopsis of the novel reads: "Set in early 19th century England, Pride and Prejudice tells the story of the five unmarried daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet after the wealthy and eligible Mr. Bingley and his status-conscious friend, Mr. Darcy, move into their neighborhood. While Bingley immediately takes a shine to the eldest Bennet daughter, Jane, Darcy struggles to fit into local society and repeatedly clashes with the second-eldest Bennet daughter, Elizabeth."
