Nikki Haley told the Republican National Convention that “Donald Trump has my strong support, period,” and that she has repaired ties with the former president after a bitter primary in which she called him “not qualified” for the office.
Nikki Haley Addresses RNC: 'Donald Trump Has My Strong Support — Period'
“We have a country to save and a united Republican Party is essential to saving it,” Haley said, as Trump sat in the VIP room of the Fiserv Forum and clapped as she spoke.
She added: "For those who have doubts about President Trump, let me tell you a few things about the commander in chief that I know and have worked with. As ambassador to the United Nations, I had a front-row seat to his national security policies. We can certainly use that again."
Haley had been Trump’s ambassador to the United Nations, but she spoke out against him after the January 6 attack on the Capitol. She then decided to run for president, becoming his main rival for the GOP nomination. During the campaign, she criticized Trump for not stopping the January 6 siege of the Capitol, mocked his cognitive abilities for mistaking her for Nancy Pelosi in a speech, and declared that he “couldn’t win a general election.”
