Olympic boxing champion Imane Khelif has filed a complaint against social media platform X for “moral harassment” following her participation in the Paris Olympics.
Why the Imane Khelif controversy exposes the flaws in the Olympic gender test
The newspaper Le Monde reports that the Algerian fighter has continued her campaign at the Paris Criminal Court’s National Centre for Combating Online Hatred. Her complaint describes how her quarter-final match in the Olympic competition, in which her opponent withdrew from the ring shortly after the match had started, prompted a flood of hate messages against Khelif. She was described as “a transgender person” who deliberately competed in the wrong category, and accused of “violence against women”. Her lawyer said these messages had been viewed more than 100 million times worldwide and had caused an ordeal for her client during a major sporting event.
Khelif won the gold medal by beating China's Yang Liu in the women's 66kg category on Friday. She said: "I am fully qualified to participate in this competition. I am a woman, I was born as a woman, I have lived as a woman and I have competed as a woman. There is no doubt about that.
“There are enemies of success – that's what I call them. That of course also gives my success a special touch through these attacks.”
