The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has kicked off the 97th annual Academy Awards, which will take place on Sunday, March 2, 2025.
The Academy Screening Room made its first titles available to members on Friday, with Magnolia Pictures’ Thelma ; Netflix’s Shirley , Hit Man and the animated Ultraman: Rising , all coming to the platform; plus Oscilloscope Laboratories’ Wildcat . That list will undoubtedly grow as the new season rolls around. The cost, as of last season, is $20,000 for studio films and $8,000 for indies.
Thelma is a comedy starring 94-year-old June Squibb as a grandmother who becomes the victim of an internet money scam that preys on the elderly and decides to take matters into her own hands. Magnolia hopes to attract Oscar voters for Squibb's performance, as well as the Golden Globes Comedy/Musical category and critics.
