Our Flag Means Death may be stuck in the gravy basket after Max's cancellation of the pirate rom-com, but there are still plenty of questions lingering after the epic Season 2 finale, "Mermen."

In November, HBO and Max Chairman Casey Bloys said, "It's certainly an incredibly funny, well-made, poignant show. I mean, it's a great show. We're trying to figure out, does it make sense [to renew]?" (Season 2 aired its finale on October 26.)

Ultimately, a decision was made in January 2024, as a spokesperson for the streamer revealed in a statement: "While Max will not be moving forward with a third season of Our Flag Means Death, we are so proud of the joyful, hilarious and heartfelt stories that creator David Jenkins, Taika Waititi, Rhys Darby, Garrett Basch, Dan Halsted, Adam Stein, Antoine Douaihy and the entire incredible cast and crew brought to life. We also thank the dedicated fans who embraced these stories and built a wonderful, inclusive community around the show."

Inspired by real-life pirate characters, OFMD follows the story of pirate Stede Bonnet (Darby) who finds himself in over his head and crosses paths with the infamous Blackbeard, aka Ed Teach (Waititi). What begins as an unlikely friendship turns into a surprisingly sweet romance between the adventurers.
