Paris Olympics organizers apologize for unintentional Last Supper parody during opening ceremony
The organizers of the Paris Olympics apologized on Sunday to anyone offended by an image of transvestites during the opening ceremony that was reminiscent of Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper."
Friday's ceremony featured LGBTQ+ icon, DJ and producer Barbara Butch, flanked by drag performers and dancers.
Religious conservatives condemned the segment, with the Bishops' Conference of the French Catholic Church deploring the "scenes of mockery" that they said parodied Christianity. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova and the Anglican Communion in Egypt also complained.
