The Paris Olympics, packed with viral moments, star-studded competitions and dazzling Parisian backdrops, generated more than 1.3 million posts on TikTok, a 1,828% increase over the Tokyo Games, according to figures released by the social media platform on 7 August.
TikTok, which partnered with Team GB during the sporting event, also reported that 233,440 creators created content under the #Olympics hashtag, an 822% increase from Tokyo. The #Paris2024 hashtag, meanwhile, generated more than 526,700 posts. The two biggest viral stars of these Olympics were Norwegian swimmer Henrik Christiansen, aka Muffin Man, and American equestrian superstar Stephen Nedoroscik.
Christiansen racked up 83 million video views for his love of chocolate muffins made in the athletes’ village. The organizing committee said 3,000 muffins were eaten daily during the Olympics, though it’s certain Christiansen didn’t eat them all. Nedoroscik, on the other hand, created the first viral moment when he drew comparisons to Clark Kent after winning the individual bronze medal on the pommel.
