Kino Lorber has acquired North American rights to Oh, Canada, the drama that sees filmmaker Paul Schrader teaming up with actor Richard Gere for the first time since 1980's American Gigolo.
Details about Oh, Canada Film directed by Paul Schrader and starring Richard Gere and Jacob Elordi
Starring Uma Thurman, Jacob Elordi and Michael Imperioli, the film will be in contention for an awards show with a theatrical release in December, followed by home video, educational and digital releases across all major platforms. Following its competition premiere at Cannes, the film’s next notable stops on the festival circuit include the Toronto Film Festival and the New York Film Festival.
Written and directed by Schrader, Oh, Canada is based on the novel Foregone by the late Russell Banks, whose novel Affliction was the source material for Schrader's 1997 film of the same name. Gere plays documentary filmmaker Leonard Fife, who, for a final interview, reveals the unvarnished facts of his life, reflecting on his relationships, regrets and mortality.
Fervent but with age and illness in mind, the ailing artist sets out to tell his life story, unfiltered, before it’s too late. As a director of acclaimed documentary exposés, he has much to be proud of, but his dodging of the Vietnam War draft and his past relationships harbor inconvenient truths. Ultimately, Leonard decides to expose the truth and lies in his life and career, sitting for an extended filmed interview with his former student Malcolm (Imperioli), telling candid stories about his younger self (Elordi) in the troubled 1960s and beyond. At Leonard’s urging, his wife and indispensable partner, Emma (Thurman), hears it all. Leonard’s successes are pitted against his shortcomings—the lies against the facts—and as the man is cleansed of the myth, Leonard must face what’s left.
