The Philippines and China are making “slow progress” in their efforts to avoid naval clashes in the disputed waters of the South China Sea, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said Tuesday.

In a media interview after the 125th anniversary celebration of the Department of Agriculture, Marcos Jr. cited “improved communication” between the two countries.
He made the statement after a Chinese navy vessel followed the BRP Francisco Dagohoy from Pag-asa Island on Thursday as the ship returned to Palawan.
Several countries, including the Philippines and China, claim sovereignty over the maritime area, which is rich in natural resources.
