Pixar's Secret Formula for Making Perfect Movies | The Art Of Film
The potential to bring high dynamic range images to the masses in cinemas – with a palette of brighter whites and deeper blacks – has received a lot of attention thanks to Belgian projector maker Barco and the launch of its HDR by Barco projectors. In general, the pace appears to be accelerating, with participation from a growing number of manufacturers and stakeholders.
This June, select paying viewers will get the chance to experience this technology with “Inside Out 2,” Pixar’s highly anticipated sequel to the 2016 Oscar winner.
The animation studio is in the process of creating a version of the film that takes advantage of HDR’s wider color gamut. The film will be shown in a select number of theaters around the world that have direct-view displays (i.e., theaters with LED screens instead of traditional movie theater projection systems) that meet HDR technical specifications set by studio consortium Digital Cinema Initiatives.
